Lyrical Mad Man or Just A Drop Out Genius

In Hip Hop, Media, Social Media on November 19, 2011 at 6:38 pm

Tyler, the Creator is one of those rap artists that you would cross the street to walk on the other side, than casually run towards him to get an autograph. He is known for his dark and offensive lyrics that make you jump and widen your eyes and think ‘what sort of sick and twisted boy are you?’ We listen to his music and before actually thinking about it deeply, we judge him and call him things like the demon of the music industry.

If we listen to Tyler, the Creator on a deeper level, we start to actually realise that he is speaking sense. He isn’t your typical artist, he goes against the normal structure  of the music industry. Most artist talk about drugs, sex and money whereas Tyler, sadly talks about ‘raping  bitches.’ Yes, that is kinda disturbing but lets go deeper than that.

Lets look at Yonkers for example. Tyler, rebelling against the normal structure of the music industry, makes him an outcast. In society, if we are an outcast, we are seen to not be normal but Tyler, in a strange way, embraces it and curses heavily as a way of saying ‘I don’t care.’ In Yonkers, Tyler contradicts himself a lot in his verses. He says one thing and then comes back saying the complete opposite.

EXAMPLE #1: ” I’m a f-ckin’ walkin’ paradox, no I’m not,

Threesomes with a fuckin’ triceratops, Reptar

EXAMPLE #2: ” While Syd is tellin’ me that she’s been gettin’ intimate with men,

Syd, shut the fuck up, Here’s the number to my therapist, he’s f-ckin’ awesome with listenin

When a person contradicts himself, we think they have no clear idea what they are actually saying. In some cases, that is true. Tyler on the other hand, contradicts himself as a point. He says one thing about himself or something in general and then says the complete opposite. The lyrics about Syd and the therapist is a perfect example. He doesn’t care if Syd is getting intimate with men. She should go and see a therapist because he doesn’t give a shit. He ignores Syd’s problem, like he ignores societies expectations of a mainstream rapper. He is definitely not a mainstream rapper. Neither is his group, OFWGKTA.  We have norms in society and his lyrics are simply mad rather than ‘normal.’ We obviously know, nothing will change Tyler’s lyrics but all we can do is just accept it as his personality. A thoughtful person would say, that by looking at the music video above and his music in general, he isn’t making a point. The truth is that there is no point to make, other than every persons personality is different. Even so, every persons personality is unique. And all one can do, is accept it.

I am not saying Tyler, the Creator is perfect. I am just saying that before an artist is labelled, we need to look deeper at their music to really understand their message. Once we do that, then we can make a valid judgement. It is not shocking that many people make unintelligent judgments because a lot of people, lack the drive to discover how deep the ditch can go. Some will say ‘cool, let me listen to more,’ others will say ‘not my thing,’ and his typical fans will say ‘burn shit, fuck school.’

I want to hear your point of views. Comment below on what you think. I have told you my view, now it is time to share yours. And does it take a intelligent person to do such a thing like this?

White Louis Boat Shoes And A Hip Hop Journey

In Hip Hop, Media on November 13, 2011 at 2:35 am

When it comes to music, Hip Hop is the one type of music, I can listen to through out the day and not get even a tiny bit bored or fustrated by repetition, rhythm and rhyming. I could hear an album about 4 times in a day with frequent intervals, where I play another artist. Let’s take something old school like KRS One.

The philosophy of the above musical production is just brilliant. I would play this early in the morning. Hip Hop is never too early to play in the day. For me to get to know about these sort of artists, it takes years and my mum constantly saying to me ‘Derrick, rip this CD’ (computer storage  taken and curious eyes widen). Would I rip the CD? Nope, until the following week. Only because at that time I am playing something like this.

Forget the whole, Illuminati conspiracy, I just love listening to a good production and execution of a Jay Z track. Strangely, when I heard this track, I hadn’t listened to Blueprint 3. Call me late with Hip Hop, that wouldn’t be the first time. I heard this song for the first time about a month ago. I must have heard it ages ago but can’t remember.

So Jay Z is finished and I am at the point in my hip hop life, where I need something a little bit rude, but has a awesome production. I was doing a review for a magazine a while back, and in the magazine, Tyler, the Creator popped up. I had no clue who he was or what his group were all about. I listened to his music and came across Earl Sweatshirt. That was the day my addiction to OFWGKTA (Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All) started. Everyday from there was Odd Future day.  Breakfast was Tyler, lunch was Earl Sweatshirt and dinner was Hodgy Beats.

My mum has called me crazy. The lyrics and the name of the song itself, automatically brings about negativity. I couldn’t help listening to them. Must have been a serious addiction that needed hospital treatment. I wonder if OFWGKTA would be as popular as they are if they spoke positively about people and their actions with the same beats. I don’t think they would be that popular. What can I say? They are simply talented and lucky to be popular towards a certain crowd of people. What is next destination on my hip hop journey. I gotta become a more sane individual and listen to what the masses are listening to. It keeps me in tune with what is new and fresh or old and fresh on a dance floor with people that cannot dance.

I hope everyone is keeping up with this post. This may be one of the most craziest hip hop journeys you have been on in your life.

I have told you the music I listen to but I haven’t told you about my favourite hip hop track ever. That is very important. Some people may not agree with what I post as my ‘best’ or ‘favourite’ or ‘dope ass’ tune.

In the most simple terms possibly, you are watching a master at work. Okay maybe not me, but I am getting there. I am one strange individual when it comes to music. You must be thinking, you like Masta Killa who talks about water flowing, crashing and never ending riddles but then dwells on Tyler’s crazy lyrics about ‘raping bitches.’ Now let me put on my imaginary white Louie boat shoes and simply say >>> I SIMPLY LOVE HIP HOP!

Life Through The Lens

In Photography, Self Expression on November 8, 2011 at 11:37 pm

The secret and beauty of living life is just simply living it to the maximum. I love my life and wouldn’t change it for anything. So many things have happened that I would never substitute or take back. I am completely satisfied with the way everything has happened in my life so far, and hopefully it can continue the way it has been unfolding steadily. Hanging out with friends, and being in the moment and not worrying about anything else except taking life in, is simply beautiful.

TheLookoutDiary, with the help of his friends, exhibit life in the making.

What you see is life in the making. We don’t watch life happen, because everyday, whatever we are doing, we are living it fully!

PEOPLE THAT WATCH AND PEOPLE THAT DO!

In Media, Self Help on November 3, 2011 at 11:55 pm

In society, we have two types of people. The people that watch and the people that do.

The people that watch, always watch what people do. Then they say they want to do things other people are doing, but never actually get round to doing it. They want to do a sport but never go outside to practice. They want to become a rapper or singer, instead they watch so many YouTube video’s of celebrities but never practice. You have people that love to procrastinate. They say they will do something but never get to that point because they have other things on their mind. They lack dedication and drive. Some people simply don’t have time. I always curse 24 hours in a day. I wish the world had 48 hours in a day with short sleep intervals instead of a whole night of sleeping.

The problem with watching, is that you will never get things done. You will get excited by what is happening but never make strategic moves to do what you intended to do. It slows you down as an individual and can cause you to never achieve what you want. This can be avoided by changing your attitude towards what your aims and objectives are in life, and actively taking part in what you want out of life.

The active people in society, are those who actually do what they planned to do. They have passed the stage of watching (quite addictive) and onto the path of doing and achieving. Lets take Top Boy for example. It is a programme that has been aired on Channel 4 this week so far. The actors in Top Boy are actively doing what they want in life and achieving what they want to be (actors). For a percentage of people that watch Top Boy, they are watching the show for entertainment purposes. The people watching the show, a certain percentage are not gaining anything out of it, except entertainment. Entertainment is supposed to excite you, put you on edge and want you to come back for more. From entertaining you, a number of people stop doing what they want to do and achieve in life, and instead, give the actors success by watching their show. It is how the world works, especially the power, the media has on society and changing our thoughts and feelings towards certain things. So people watching Top Boy, are not gaining knowledge or intelligence or financial stability to live but instead, the actors are getting that in return. You are basically allowing the people in the media to gain a lifestyle you wish you had, by watching their shows and listening to their music.

You could criticise my view and say, you have worked so hard during the day that you deserve a break and freedom to indulge in art. That is a fair point. We should have times when we can just be lazy. You could question me and say life isn’t about being lazy, it is about being active. My alter-ego, TheLookoutDiary and myself (Derrick), still hold the opinion that the people that do instead of watch, benefit from society on a larger scale. So, as individuals what can we do to change that? We can spend more time achieving our dreams, whatever they may be, or watch active people achieve their dreams. It is up to you.

Due to my passion for writing, I have not watched any episode of Top Boy this week, and don’t intend to until my work is done and my writing for this week is complete.

IT’S NOT ABOUT LOOKING, IT’S ABOUT LIVING

In Relationships, Self Help on November 1, 2011 at 1:04 am

A lot of people my age (16) are getting into relationships in college with people that they just met. After a month or less, they have broken up and back to being friends. A lot of them continue living their life like they didn’t just have a relationship and some actually felt like they had something special and worth keeping. I think being 16, people are still too young to understand the complexity of a relationship. We should be teenagers and enjoy the friendships we have with people, than get into relationships that don’t last very long due to the lack of chemistry. I personally believe, when we are young, we are learning how to treat people in a friendship and how to make a friendship flourish. I believe once we understand how to keep a friendship flourishing, then a committed relationship is the next step.

Being in a relationship is about being at ease with another individual. We should feel comfortable being around them and laugh with them naturally, instead of forcing it to please one another. I personally, haven’t been in a relationship but I have had really good friendships with people. Some friendships become so close, that you give your female friend the the sister role instead of a potential future girlfriend.  You can learn so much from a sister about relationships than anywhere else, mainly because your ‘sister’ is a female herself. If you don’t have a friend like that, you should interact with more females and find one. You could just talk to a bunch of random females you meet on the street, if you have the confidence to ask them for an outside opinion. They will most likely answer your friendly question if you come across as genuinely curious instead of a freak that has been stalking them since they left Starbucks, and crossed the street opposite McDonald’s.

I would also advise any teenage guy who isn’t in a relationship to concentrate on what they are passionate about because if you do, females would admire that, because it shows that women are not on your mind 24/7. I realised this myself, and was told the exact same thing by some of my beautiful female friends from college. I do hang out with women but I do take the time to work on my passion which is writing. I am not pursuing women, but most importantly pursuing my passion for writing. I want to inspire many by my words, and what that means is not looking for women because I know, and you should definitely know, that women will always be there.

I asked a few of my friends for their personal opinion on what is needed for long and lasting relationship. Here are some of their thoughts.

Daniel Cayford:

”Knowing about what they actually want from life, and seeing how the two of you, together, are stronger than when you were single.”

Christian Hayward:

”Knowing each other in a extended bit of time and not having sex on the first date.”

Makeda D. O-Cole:

” You shouldn’t enter something, you know with all your heart, isn’t going to go somewhere and doesn’t have a future.”

A relationship is supposed to last; it isn’t supposed about showing off to your friends that you have girlfriend or boyfriend. It is about liking someone who you really connect with. It is also about sharing the same values and common interests with another individual that makes you happy. Love the people you socially connect with, and develop a lasting and meaningful friendship with your friends. The rest will come in time.

What do you think? Do you agree with what I think? What is your verdict on a lasting relationship or even developing a lasting friendship?
